The Dream Machine is n intergalactic pop-concept album that is a reconstructed history by 22nd century anthropologist Anne Halfpenny, based on fragments of a rediscovered dream recording apparatus and two diaries . Below is an excerpt from the preface of her thesis which recounts the infamous disappearance of the world's pre-eminent dreamer, Arie Trevalana, fromTolon Merriman's Dream Factory studios.

"In my travels, and even as a child, I have often heard stories of Rainbow, a mineral which conducts thought. Our own University founder, Zar Wolfsbane, had a close interest in the substance, but until now we had no clear evidence that he had found what he was looking for.

In this volume I offer the dreams of Arie Trevalana, premier storyteller in Zar's court, and apparently also premier dreamer of Tolon Merriman's Dream Factory in Paris, Earth. Arie left the court very siddenly, just as, apparently, she also left Earth's dream industry suddenly and in mysterious circumstances after only a short time working in the field. Her Dream Machine and two diaries were recently uncovered in the archives at Zar University Castle. Clearly this is an exciting discovery for the University, with previously unknown references to our founder and all the more exciting because the manner and date of it's arrival are still a mystery..."

From the Dream Machine - Act 1

ARIEL

I’ve heard music from the deep,
but this is deeper
sweet and low it overflows
darker rhythm, sacred, hidden
and unbidden, something glows

who are you? calling me on and upwards
who are you? I see you ripple green and blue
through ocean foam that breaks my view

 what if nothing’s there?
only loose earth and the empty air?

 strong impartial life a-gleaming
steaming greenly through the deep
silent darkness keeps me under
sings its solace as I sleep

who are you? calling me on and upwards
who are you? in the light I fear I must go up in flames and turn to dust
fall to ash and fade away
isn’t there another way?

 cause what if nothing’s there?
only loose earth and the empty air?

who are you to shine so strongly?
making all these stars ignite?
have I dreamed my life so wrongly?
who are you, what is that light?

I can’t leave well enough alone anymore
I will go, I have to know, I must be sure.
